Of the 55 mosquito species the Indiana Department of Health collects, about a dozen are considered disease vectors. Only mated females bite animals. These blood meals provide the proteins necessary for eggs to develop. How far mosquitoes travel depends on the availability of shelter, food, and blood meals. Some mosquitoes have a short flight range of a few blocks, while others can fly for miles. Several mosquito species adults normally fly between dusk and dawn when looking for mates, finding sources of nectar, and obtaining blood meals.
Harborage sites allow females to rest, digest blood meals, avoid sunlight, and stay dry. Water that collects in a single discarded tire can breed 10,000 to 500,000 mosquitoes over the course of one season. To avoid becoming mosquito breeding sites, regularly change the water in bird baths and other water features found in the landscape.
Mosquito larvae can thrive in any container that holds water for a week or so. That is about all the time they need to grow from egg to adult.
How Does Mosquito Control Work?
Mosquito control practices disrupt the ‘harborage’ si these unwanted pests. Distrupting the mosquito’s habitat results in aroduced breeding population and reduced discomfort while in your outdoor space.
A water-based mist is sprayed in and around landecape vegetation and shaded areas where mosquitos harbor during the day. These tiny mist particles carry a small amount of product targeting the mosquito while not harming larger insects.
We can’t eliminate mosquitoes entirely; some can fly as far as 15 miles from their breeding grounds. Therefore, our goal is to reduce the mosquito population in your yard by killing the adults and preventing the young from reproducing.
How You Can Help
- Eliminate stagnant water in your yard.
- provide fountains or bubblers in ponds and bird baths.
- empty unused buckets, bowls, anything holding water.
- keep your gutters clean of debris so that water flows freely.
MOSQUITO LARVAE SURVIVE IN STAGNANT WATER.
We Spray By The Rules
Per label instructions of the produsts used to control mosquitoes, we do not directly spray ‘touchable’ surfaces e.g., outdoor furniture, deck railings and play equipment. Acditionally, direct spray to impervious surfaces e.g., pool decks, patios and decking, is not effective mosquito control. Treatment is directed toward vegation where mosquitoes harbor.
To protect pollinators, we do not treat the plants, trees and shrubs when they are flowering.
